The story of photography
The story of photography is a story of global discovery and change going right back to ancient times when people noticed that bright light shining through a tiny hole cast a small, upside-down image on a wall. For centuries it was understood that controlled light could produce an image and it was noted by such scientists as Leonardo Da Vinci, and used by artists to help them make paintings.
But it wasn't until scientists found chemicals that would react to light that the image could be captured. These chemicals were called an emulsion and included the use of silver nitrate, which turned dark when exposed to light. But these images rapidly disappeared when exposed to strong light. It wasn't until 1826 that a chemical was found to make the exposed image permanent, that modern photography was born. In 1827 the first successful modern photograph was produced by Nicephore Niepce with an eight hour exposure time.
Even then, photographers, scientists and artists around the world experimented with chemicals to make them respond to light faster, and with bases to hold the emulsion ranging from leather, tin, copper and glass to paper. The birth of the motion picture in the 1920s shifted the base to celluloid film. Not long after that, scientists found ways to use red, green and blue filters to make colour pictures, although the process wasn't refined and mass marketed as colour film until the 1950s.
In 1921, Albert Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics, not for his famous theory of relativity, but rather for explaining the photoelectric effect (Quantum Theory developed in 1905). It is this effect operating in an image sensor inside a digital camera (CCD chip - a semi-conductor) that produces an electric charge when light strikes the surface of the silicon on the CCD. These electrons are then converted into digital information - a digital image. Other modern devices made possible by Einstein's Quantum Theory: television and computers.
Digital cameras started appearing on the market in the 1990s. An example is Apple's QuickTake (1994) which could connect to any Mac and was the first mass-market digital camera. At this stage, manufacturers were still not sure what digital cameras should look like.
Digital cameras are now far more complex tools that film cameras ever were. Although the history of the development of photography may belong to scientists, the successful and innovative use of photography belongs to artists. And artists always understand their tools.
Film Photography overview
Light is packed with energy (which is why you get a sunburn if you stay in the bright light of the sun too long). That energy is essential to photography. In film photography that energy in light ignites chemical reactions when the camera's shutter is tripped. The light focused by the lens shoots through layers of a very thin gelatin emulsion that rests on a base made up of celluloid (film). Buried in that emulsion are microscopic crystals which respond to specific colours of light creating a latent image on the film - one that is not yet visible.
Colour film forms with three latent images, one for red, green and blue, the primary colours of light. But film stores the opposite to the real colours. In other words, a red object that is photographed will be stored on the film as its opposite colour, cyan.
To make the image visible, the film is passed through a chain of chemical baths. The film cannot be exposed to light until the last chemical has been used, fixer. After drying, the film is ready to produce prints. This is done by shining light through the film onto special photo paper that responds to the various colours in the film and produces another image in the opposite colours, so the cyan object becomes red again - its real colour. This also must be done in a dark room with good ventilation.
This whole process takes a long time - at least many hours - although a photo lab can do it in one hour.
After a picture is stored on film there is only so much that can be done with it. How the film is processed can change the image - but only once. Then the picture is frozen in the form of chemical molecules that have clumped together to form microscopic dots of colour. There is no way to manipulate those molecules. When you make prints from film you can lighten and darken the image on the photo paper, or even burn and dodge just sections of the image in the darkroom, but those are cosmetic changes. The fact remains that after visual information is stored on film it is fixed for all time. Which can be a very good thing.
Digital Photography overview
With a digital image (from a camera or scanner) there's no limit whatsoever to what you can do with it after it is stored. That's because the image is not chemically created but made by a huge array of numbers. To change a digital image, all you have to do is manipulate the numbers in an image editing program like Photoshop. And you can change it as many times as you wish.
The silicon microchip is the heart of digital photography and takes the place of film. The one on the left is actual size, although some can be smaller and a few are bigger. This small image sensor measures the intensity of the light that hits it, distinguishes all the gradations of light that play on its surface, and it stores this information as electrical current.
But this image sensor is colour blind. It is not until the concentrated light passes through colour filters (red, green and blue) that colour emerges. The electrical information is passed along to another chip that translates it into numbers (digital information) before the digital information (numbers) is stored on a memory device inside the camera (Flash card).
Another obvious difference between the film and digital processes, is that digital cameras have an LCD screen which allows you to preview your shot, then see it immediately after you have pressed the shutter so you can decide whether or not to keep the image.
Digital cameras also allow you to do a white balance for each picture in order to get the correct colour tint under various lighting conditions. With film you must choose the lighting conditions under which you will shoot (outdoors, indoors) when you buy the film, and the whole roll must be shot using that colour tint (warm or cool) even though you make take pictures outdoors and indoors.
Also, the light sensitivity of the film must be decided when you buy it (ISO) and every picture taken on that roll uses this sensitivity setting, even though you may shoot different pictures in many different light intensities. With a digital camera you can change the ISO equivalent with every picture.
And, with a digital image, you can make multiple copies and save one in full colour, change one to grayscale and save one in sepia tone or any other colour you want - something impossible to do with film.
Similarities between film and digital
There are many similarities in the way that film and digital cameras work:
1. T hey look similar, although you can open up the back of a film camera and you can't a digital camera.
2. Both have lenses.
3. Both have viewfinders, although many digital cameras are eliminating the traditional viewfinder in favour of bigger and brighter LDC screens.
4. Both need batteries. For a film camera, a battery is needed to power the light meter and auto-focusing functions. In a digital camera, battery power is needed to do everything and digital cameras can be very hard on batteries.
5. Both (in all but the simplest of cameras) allow you to control settings for aperture and shutter, as well as settings for different lighting conditions, although digital cameras usually have far more setting options than film cameras.
Uses: Film and Digital
Film is slowly dying for the consumer market. Major camera manufacturers such as Nikon and Pentax have already stopped making film cameras completely because consumer demand simply isn't there anymore. Film companies such as Agfa and Fuji have gone out of the film business entirely. Film is becoming the realm of the fine art photographer, and will probably remain around for quite a while in that small niche.
While film still has the slight edge on quality (resolution), even that is rapidly disappearing as digital cameras with more megapixels come on the market. But digital is more sensitive to light than film allowing the photographer to get better pictures in darker light situations. Astronomers use digital imaging exclusively and have since the 1980s.

Prints made from film have been around a long time and their permanence is unquestioned. They won't fade for hundreds of years. Manufacturers of digital printers advertise that their prints will last for a very long time (that has yet to be proven) but you must use special inks or dyes and special paper. Quick prints made on regular paper from your inkjet may not last more than a few months before fading.
Digital photography is everywhere. It owns the consumer market. All journalism photography is now digital and even very traditional photography magazines like National Geographic are making the switch from film to digital. Fashion, advertising, criminology, medicine, and many more types of photography, have all switched exclusively to digital. No wonder film companies are going out of business.
The reasons are many. Superb quality digital cameras are rapidly decreasing in price. A high-end digital SLR camera that cost over $10,000 a few years ago can now be purchased for about $2000, and the quality of the image is better than ever. The technology is getting more sophisticated, with digital cameras able to perform many functions including limited video capability.
Printers can now produce prints that look as good to the human eye as prints from film. Digital images can be manipulated using programs such as Photoshop to improve a poor quality image or simply apply effects.
